Sir.
With reference to your enquiry of the 4th.
instant about the balances of account of last year of the Tung
Wa Hospital, I have the honour to reply on behalf of its former
Committee that the balance taken over by them at the beginning
of the last term was $30,021.43, a debit balance, being bor-
rowed from the various funds of the Hospital.
This sun was borrowed to defray the
Hospital Expenses as it had not sufficient fund to do so. After
the issue of the last balance sheet a part $23,124.22.3 (of
$30,021.43) due to the Vaccination Hospital was refunded by drawing $10,000 from the Man Mo Temple Fund, a further loan of $9,700 from the Cheap Rice Fund and the rest from the Coffin
and Coat Fund.
The balance at the end of the year is to
be made up by the New Committee for this year.
These loans will be refunded when the
Hospital is in a position to do so and there is no stipulation as to the time and manner of their repayment, for the reason that the moneys borrowed were similarly used for charitable
purposes.
This system of borrowing was hitherto done
when the Hospital was in want of money.
I have etc.,
(Dd.) Fung Wa Chun.
